Data loss victims urged to sue for damages
An arbitration firm in the UK is encouraging citizens to sue the government for having lost their data. The company is selling packs at £5.99 which it claims will help some 25 million recent victims create a legal case for compensation.
There are mixed views within the legal world as to whether this scheme will prove effective, but it is perhaps the first example of a growing trend where consumers hold firms financially accountable for any data leakage.
As such, it will not just be public sector bodies taking close interest in this case, but private firms as well.

Where do security breaches originate?
Research from a London security consultancy has found that 30 percent of all security breaches originate from inside the IT department.
The research also identified removable media devices and mobile devices as two of the top four vehicles for data leaks.
Customer Services departments were the second worst culprits for creating data breaches. Every organization that took part in the research suffered multiple instances of data breaches, sometimes potentially very costly and damaging.
Information copied from the corporate network included HR files, pricing information, contracts and product details.

The pricing of these devices enable us to replace old floppies, CDs, DVDs. Also with the capability of going up to 2Gb it has reduced the need to move the PC or laptop.
In order to reduce concerns over moving IT data securely, Dorset, Beds & Leicestershire Police Constabularies have taken positive steps to protect their IT data with the new iSecure Biometric USB flash drive.
Conventional USB drives have little if no security features; so if they are lost or stolen then anyone can access the data held on the USB stick via a PC.
The new finger print secure flash drives use Carry It Easy s/w from CoSoSys. MicroRiver USB drive has two levels of protection;
1) A conventional password
2) Biometric.
Up to 10 finger print impressions can be stored. Hence the user would need the password (if used) or the correct finger print image to gain access to either the 1GB 2GB 4GB 8GB or 16GB USB Flash drive.
Typical applications of for the smaller devices are to store MS Offices data - e.g. Word, PowerPoint etc, whilst the larger storage volumes have benefits in capturing High-Resolution, Scene of Crime images and Video Capture within car number plate recognition systems.

Keep your confidential data - confidential! |

* Do the USB drives you use have no security measures at all?
* Do you use/allow remote access?
* Do you still rely on weak, static password security?
In the last few weeks, MPs on the Justice Select Committee have called for new laws to introduce heavy fines and/or jail terms to protect the integrity of personal data.
UK Information Commissioner Richard Thomas has also argued for much tighter data protection laws in Britain, insisting that those who lose data should end up in court.
Thomas told the Lords Constitution Committee that those who knowingly or recklessly flout data protection rules should be prosecuted and fined up to £5,000. "If a doctor or hospital [employee] leaves a laptop containing patient records in his car and it is stolen, it is hard to see that as anything but gross negligence," Thomas told the Lords.
He also proposed that companies and organisations, should be inspected without warning for data security, rather than the current system which relies on consent.
Is the confidential information you currently hold secure.
Or are you sitting on a Data-Loss, Time Bomb?
It is a shocking but true fact that data-loss has become an everyday occurance.
Gartner research recently found that almost a quarter of all USB flash drives are sold to enterprises. Yet about 80 to 90 per cent of those are not encrypted. Organisations know full well that there is a problem with that.
Given the recent spate of data breaches at HMRC, Local Authorities and NHS trusts, the ground swell of opinion is that Mr Thomas's approach and the threat of a prison sentence, is the only way to get people to take this problem seriously.
